Youth Group to Deliver Human Rights Education
Published 15th November 2007, 8:07pm
Following its successful Public Education Campaign and the release of its Report on Human Rights Education, the HRC is now seeking to work with schools and youth groups to provide guidance on human rights and the work of the HRC.
The first in a series of initiatives is being hosted by the youth group Generation NOW and will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Family Life Centre on Walkers Road. The HRC’s presentation will be delivered by its Deputy Chair, Mr. Vaughan Carter, and the Chair of the HRC’s Constitutional Working Group, Ms. Melanie McLaughlin. Together, they will explain the concept of human rights, the international development of human rights and their relevance to the Cayman Islands.
As Ms. McLaughlin explained, "This is an extremely important initiative and most timely in light of the Constitutional Modernization process currently underway. The HRC is pleased to work with groups such as Generation NOW and looks forward to discussing issues surrounding the inclusion of a Human Rights Chapter in the Constitution and what this might mean for the Cayman Islands."
The overall objective of Generation NOW is the empowerment of young people in the community by imparting to them good values, together with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed for successful living. The Youth Empowering Program, which is held every Saturday at the Family Life Centre, is geared towards producing well-adjusted, productive citizens who are able to meet and overcome life’s challenges. Generation NOW’s Youth Empowering Programme features a wide range of topics designed to enlighten young people in particular on important topical issues affecting them and Cayman at large and the HRC is pleased to assist in this endeavour.
